This week, students and support staff from Downsview Life Skills College went for a day out on the train as part of GTR Southern Rail’s Try-a-train initiative.
The itinerary, put together by Sussex Coast Line Officer Rowena Tyler, and the Station Manager, had to be altered the day before, and then again, throughout the day, as the rail service was beset by incidents resulting in cancellations and delays.
But, the group thoroughly enjoyed their glimpse of a ‘day in the life of the railway industry’, with support staff commenting that the real life issues necessitating quick thinking only added to the experience.
Rowena Tyler said: I must commend the staff at Portslade, Worthing, Littlehampton and Hove stations, who went out of their way to adapt and assist the group of 15, with varying levels of accessibility needs.
Asked by GTR to sum up the experience in on sentence, they came up with the title to this post – ‘Educational, fun and a great day out!’
