Southeast Communities Rail Partnership is calling on local knitters and crocheters to help spread kindness and care this White Ribbon Day.
White Ribbon Day, held every year on 25 November, is a national awareness campaign, on a mission to prevent violence against women and girls by addressing its root causes. The charity encourages everyone (especially men and boys), to make the White Ribbon Promise to never use, excuse or remain silent about men’s violence against women.
This year, Sussex Coast CRP – part of Southeast Communities Rail Partnership – has partnered with West Sussex County Council on the ‘Your Community Cares’ campaign. On 25 November, community rail volunteers will be handing out handmade white woollen hearts to rail passengers and staff, showing that their community stands with them and cares. The hearts will be accompanied by cards with QR codes to resources including White Ribbon, the Samaritans, the council safeguarding team and Southeast Communities Rail Partnership.
The CRP is asking for local people to knit or crochet a heart, using white wool only. Hearts can be any pattern or design but must be no larger than 10cm. Finished hearts should be dropped off at participating libraries and stations by 10 November 2025.
Lynda Spain, line officer for the Sussex Coast CRP, part of Southeast Communities Rail Partnership, said: “We want to bring people together and create a visible symbol of compassion and support across our rail network. These small handmade hearts carry a big message: our community cares.
“We’d also love to see this taken up by other community rail partnerships, to send a joined-up message of care and support across the country. Together, we can make kindness travel further.”
