North Downs Line Community Rail Partnership Chair, Councillor Mike Goodman, was delighted to see the exemplary efforts of five volunteers from the Department for Transport at Dorking Deepdene station last week. The volunteers used their community time away from the department’s aviation section in London to join North Downs Line Development Officer, David Daniels, to build some planters at the station.

In spite of the inclement weather the team worked exceptionally hard in the pouring rain to fashion the structures using cut-down rail sleepers provided by Network Rail, filling them with soil ready for plants in the autumn.

Mike said, “The team of three women and two men did really well in difficult circumstances, even though the sleepers are cut short they’re still very heavy ! Thanks to the Department for allowing them to use their time at Deepdene.”

GWR’s North Downs Line Station Manager, Mal Thurman, was also very pleased with the result and looks forward to Patchwork Gardening Project of Dorking planting them up in due course.
