A project funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, organised by Culture Shift, kicked off this week with a visit by train to Fishbourne, where the Roman Palace is situated.
Time Travel In Sussex is about creating opportunities for learning disabled adults and their carers to explore a range of Heritage venues in East and West Sussex, specifically chosen because they are located near to train stations, encouraging people to gain confidence and experience of travelling by train. SCRP Line Officers will be working alongside staff and volunteers from the heritage venues, Culture Shift creative coaches and the Community 21 design team at University of Brighton who will produce co-designed resources to be shared at each venue with future visitors, encouraging everyone to enjoy the venues in positive and accessible ways.
Rowena Tyler, SCRP Line Officer for the Arun Valley Line said: ‘This was an excellent way to bring a group of people to one of the most important Roman sites in Southern England, at the same time as improving their confidence in travelling by train. We all had a great time and the staff at Fishbourne Roman Palace were so enthusiastic and knowledgeable, we can’t wait for our second trip in April.’
