Winter Warmer at Guildford station

Clothes given away to those in need

December 3, 2024

Sara Grisewood

Concept and aims

To organise a giveaway of donated warm winter clothes to those in need and to help build partnerships with Voluntary Action South West Surrey and Network Rail and SWR at Guildford station

What happened

We asked Network Rail for the use of an empty shop unit at the front of Guildford station to hold a Winter Warmer event. We had help and support from Lucy Lomax at Hampshire CRP and the model of the successful Reading station Winter Warmer.  This was a much smaller shop unit and we made contacts with groups in Guildford, including support from VASWS and ZERO Guildford, which was invaluable. The project was delivered over 2 days, with donations being collected on the first day and the coats and other clothes were given away on day 2. Network Rail and SWR were very helpful at all times.

Results

The project was very successful in building partnerships; over 200 coats were donated and given away. Even the ones left over went to a local homeless refuge. The response from visitors to the shop, the volunteers and station staff was very positive.

Impact

Some of the volunteers from VASWS were new to volunteering and they enjoyed the event and felt fulfilled.

The donations came from station staff, train users, general public and demonstrated overwhelming generosity The event had a positive impact on all involved as it felt like we were giving something back.
icon
The people who visited the shop were pleased to be able to take away donated warm winter clothes, usually in very good condition.

It was a recycling project; much of these kinds of clothes often go to landfill. The cost of the project was minimal and station staff helped with loan of furniture, with moving and setting it up. VASWS funded the poster and printing and ZERO were helpful organizing donations.

The event also really contributed to building good relationships between the railway company and the local community, demonstrating partnership working integral to community rail.

It really felt like giving something back
