An opportunity from GTR was offered to do something to brighten up a huge blank space within the underpass at Redhill station. We wanted something beyond the norm, something interesting, eye-catching and we hope inspirational. Similar to ourselves, the remit of the East Surrey Arts Society (ESAS) is to bring art to unexpected places especially railway stations. No more blank walls!
The ESAS made contact with the Reigate School of Art. With their support it was decided to hold a competition with the Year One students and the theme was ‘railways’. Many submissions later, the work of one young artist, Molly McCarthy, stood out to the extent that there was no choice but to pronounce her the winner!
It was felt that the winning artwork, a very clever design of a vintage train formed using just typewriter keys captured the essence of the Railway 200 project, a mix of times gone-by but also looking forward with the inclusion of more modern technology.
The image was printed as large scale as was possible and installed in pride of place at the station.
Now it was time for a celebration for who had contributed to the project and invite local media ensuring that Molly, supported by her family, was the centre of attention.
Coffee and mince pies were served, speeches of thanks made, photographs taken, attendees were interviewed by the Planet Reigate Podcast.
A good time was had by all.
Many congratulations from Reigate & Banstead Borough Council and Councillors
"Hugely pleased with the event"
