The project was initiated to create new artwork for Platform 2 at Farnborough North Station. The existing artwork had been in place for a number of years and was removed when the new lifts and footbridge were installed as the messaging they contained referred to safety on the level crossing. We received funding from GWR CCIF and worked with staff and A level art students at The Sixth Form College Farnborough together with a professional artist, Julie Hoyle.

We received the funding in early summer 2025 and began working closely with the art teachers at the college, including arranging a workshop with professional artist Julie Hoyle which helped inspire the students in terms of techniques.
The students began work on the designs in the summer term. However it was decided to extend the project into the autumn term to allow the students to have more time within their busy curriculum to develop and reach completion.
The line officer liaised closely with the College during the design process and the final designs were submitted to GWR Branding and Marketing in December 2025 for approval. The company Transport Signs did a great job of printing and installing the large panels in early March 2026.
At the end of March we held a celebration launch for the staff and students at the Station with the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Julie Hall and the Assistant Principal of the Sixth Form College, along with representatives from GWR, CRN, SCRP and FSRA. Afterwards we had Railway 200 cupcakes and tea in Reg’s Garden.
The project has inspired further projects for the College and they have been approached by SWR to create artwork for Farnborough Main Station.
The artwork makes a huge visual impact on the platform with many customers and GWR staff already making positive comments. It is testament to the talent and skills of students and staff at The Sixth Form College and has enabled a positive partnership to be built with the College. Many students use the station and it is helpful to maintain a good relationship between the College and GWR.
At the launch event key attendees, including the Deputy Mayor of Rushmoor and Cllr Julie Hall, praised the artwork and the talents of the students and staff. These comments were used on social media and on our website to further promote the artwork. The ongoing legacy of the project will further enhance the station environment at Farnborough North and build the links with the Sixth Form College and the wider community.

The references to wildlife around the railway line and to local railway history have helped create a piece of artwork which has many layers, textures and colours. I am so proud of both the students and staff who have worked so hard to create the mural, a fantastic piece of work that celebrates the station, environment and Farnborough. It has truly exceeded all expectations and we also feel, worth the wait!
