Bike marking and security

Highlighting active and sustainable travel

May 29, 2024

Paul Bromley

Concept and aims

Theft from stations is a major anti-social issue for both railway staff and cyclists.

Making stations feel safer gives greater confidence to choose integrated active travel.

An additional element of the project was identified. Abandoned bikes were a real issue for station staff in terms of management and storage.

What happened

SCRP partnered with cycling and wheeling charity Sustrans to deliver the project.

Bike marking kits were purchased from Selectamark and they supplied additional help in kind in the form of training, contacts, expertise and publicity.

Eight Community Rail staff were trained in how to organise each event with members of the Cycle Lewes group bringing bikes so we could pilot how we would run the event.

SCRP Line Officers engaged with local partners to provide venues, reach out to beneficiaries such as the local colleges and universities.

Results

5 – number of bike marking events which took place at different locations. This covered both town centres, college and universities, and stations

59 – number of anti-theft devices fitted

6 – number of organisations which also supported the events in partnerships at the events
