Concept and aims

To create an integrated travel map for our newly funded Southeastern Trains Line 1066 Hastings to Tonbridge with a view to in the future placing an interactive map on the Southeast Communities Rail Partnership SCRP website.

The challenges for this project included: working within Covid restrictions (meaning consultation/meetings were online only), consulting widely with stakeholders to incorporate suggestions whilst keeping the map as simple and clear as possible and understanding the requirements of the creation of the online interactive map elements.

What happened

Initial meetings with Scenic Rail Britain regarding their approach to creating an online interactive nationwide map and reviewing examples of these from other community rail partnerships. Reviewing examples with SCRP staff to highlight preferences in design. A design team were identified who had worked on similar projects with Brighton and Hove Buses and Three Rivers CRP and had a good industry knowledge. From a SCRP region wide map the 1066 Line part was extracted and elaborated on. Reviews were undertaken by SCRP staff on design, content and clarity and after some amendments the draft map was shared with the 1066 Line Steering group for comment. Input from a good number of stakeholders in the group ranging from borough and parish councils , rail action groups and attractions along the line were reviewed and some further amendments made. A 2 nd draft was then circulated to staff and steering group for a final copy to be agreed. The next step is to use the layers of this map to create an interactive online version with the help of a web designer including information on Rail/Bus routes, cycle/footpaths, station partners, local attractions and history
