From small beginnings …
The London Road Brighton station partnership started in April 2011. A team of volunteers got together to look after the areas at the station including communal gardening.
The success of the partnership – and 11 years of hard work – were on show when Sussex Downs Line chair Norman Baker visited the station to see the team at work.
Elspeth Broady from the group showed Norman the planting areas where fruit trees and vegetables are producing a harvest of crops despite the challenges of a hot summer. Then it was on to the composting area where residents who have joined the scheme can bring their food waste.
There was also a chance to look at the mural in the subway produced by youngsters from the National Citizens Service in 2014.
:: The station partnership involves community representatives from the London Road area, Southeast Communities Rail Partnership, train operator Southern, Network Rail, local authorities and others working together to connect communities to their railways.
