The restorative benefits of a trip to the seaside are well documented – and the Royal family know that only too well.
Our latest Community Rail Coronation Connection is focusing on the lovely town of Worthing in West Sussex on the Sussex Coast Line running from Hove to Littlehampton.
King George III’s youngest daughter, Princess Amelia, injured her knee in 1798 and the king’s doctors sought a suitable seaside venue for her recuperation. They chose Worthing and the princess spent five months in what was then a village with her health improving considerably.
The links to Royalty continued and Worthing developed as a high-class seaside resort and spa town. The Royal Arcade was built on the site of the Royal Sea House Hotel, which had been given the prefix “Royal” after a visit from Queen Adelaide, consort of King William IV, in 1849.
We have calculated that taking a train from central London to Worthing station emits 67% less in greenhouse gases than driving a petrol car on the same route. It’s a wonderful day out for anyone looking to explore the Sussex coast.
