Buckingham Palace has confirmed that Prince Harry – but not the Duchess of Sussex – will be attending the Coronation.
The Duke of Sussex will be present at Westminster Abbey. Meghan Markle will remain in California with their two children.
The Royal family have historic links to a number of venues across our Community Rail network of lines and our latest Coronation Connection is focusing on a building which is more than 900 years old.
Guildford Castle on the North Downs Line is thought to have been built by William the Conqueror, or one of his barons, shortly after the Norman invasion of England in 1066. Used as a Royal Palace, a prison and a private residence, Guildford Castle and grounds was sold to the Guildford Corporation in 1885. The grounds at Guildford Castle opened as public gardens in 1888 to mark Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887.
The castle gardens are famous for their vibrant floral displays, centred on the 11th Century Castle Keep.
King Charles III has a long-standing commitment to the environment and so our Coronation Connection is promoting a saving of 71% in greenhouse gas emissions from taking the train rather than driving a car from central London to Guildford station on the North Downs Line to visit Guildford Castle.
