Brighton is gearing up to celebrate 50 years since Swedish band ABBA sang their way to Eurovision victory.
The group won the contest held at Brighton Dome on 6 April 1974.
Visit Brighton is encouraging people to visit the city between 5 – 7 April to re-live ABBA’s win. There will be ABBA-themed shows, bus rides and even painting sessions to celebrate Swedish music royalty in style!
An exhibition at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, Royal Pavilion Gardens, Brighton, celebrates the 50th anniversary of ABBA’s Eurovision win. Walk, dance and sing through ABBA’s visit to Brighton through photographs, film, memories and memorabilia and discover the week that catapulted the band to fame.
Brighton was electric with Eurovision fever, flags from different countries lined the streets, the contestants were photographed exploring the town, and excitement was building. ABBA’s eye-catching outfits ensured that people noticed them even before they stepped on stage. ‘Waterloo’, their winning song, became the band’s international breakthrough, despite the UK judges giving them ‘nul points’.

At the venue itself, Brighton Dome, Church Street, Brighton, there is an event with Eurovision winner Charlotte Perrelli and other Eurovision royalty who will perform ABBA’s greatest hits plus music from the Eurovision songbook backed by the fabulous Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus.
The singalong will be hosted by 1999 Eurovision winner Charlotte Perrelli alongside 2015 winner Måns Zelmerlöw, 2013 winner Emmelie de Forest, 1997 winner Katrina (Katrina and the Waves), 1992 winner Linda Martin and Nicki French, who represented the United Kingdom in 2000.
