The number of passengers using stations on the Sussex Downs Line has bounced back from the pandemic slump – but still remain below pre-Covid levels.

Latest estimates from the Office of Rail and Road show that all 10 stations on the line registered an increase in the number of passengers in the period from 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022. But the levels were all below the figures for 2019/20 (apart from Southease where numbers were higher).

Brighton is officially the sixth busiest station outside London – and the busiest in the South East.

A total of 15,392,966 passengers used the stations on the line in 2021/22 compared with 23,545,442 in the year before the pandemic.
