Updated Winchelsea travel map launched

Promotion of businesses accessible from station

Concept and aims

The aim by the Winchelsea Station Partnership Group was to update an existing travel map and leaflet to promote venues within approximately two miles of the station on the Marshlink line.

The previous leaflet had proved very popular and had been distributed widely within the village. A total of 350 copies were produced and had nearly all been taken by keen explorers of the area.

What happened

The station group contacted local businesses to see if they would like to be featured in the leaflet. Tea shops, pubs and wineries agreed to place an advert with many contributing financially to the cost of producing the leaflet.

A designer based in nearby Rye produced the artwork.

Funding came from Southeast Communities Rail Partnership, Southern Railway and Community Rail Network.

The group decided to print 500 copies of the updated travel map. Copies are available from venues in Winchelsea and at Rye railway station. A pdf version can be downloaded from SCRP’s website.

Results

The new leaflet was launched at the station with a photo-call involving the station partnership, Marshlink Community Rail Partnership line chair, the landlord of the New Inn in Winchelsea and the head teacher of St Thomas’ primary school. School pupils have provided artwork for the station noticeboard and platform shelter.

Publicity for the travel map has appeared on the Sussex World website and in Community Rail Network’s newsletter.

Impact

Boost for local economy and tourism venues. Pub landlord said it helped to promote use of train rather than car to reach the village.

Promotion of active travel, in particular direct walking and cycling routes from the station. The 1066 Country Walk and National Cycle Route 2 are accessible from Winchelsea.

Support for station partner with the map launch marking 20 years of campaigning by the Three Oaks and Winchelsea Action for Rail Transport (THWART)

”The leaflet helps to popularise the businesses local to Winchelsea station so that people can walk from the station having travelled by train and enjoy the wineries, pubs and tea rooms. We hope that this leaflet will be of help in boosting tourism in the area”
