Along the Arun Valley line, Communities and station staff have been planning events and exhibitions to commemorate the Centenary of the end of the First World War, in November 2018.
The first event ‘An Act of Remembrance’ was held at Horsham Railway Station on Friday 26th October, organised by the local branch of the Royal British Legion, to coincide with the launch of their Poppy Appeal.
The ceremony included prayers and a blessing led by Rev David Bouskill, The Exhortation and also The Dedication by Nigel Caplin, Chairman of the Horsham Branch of the Royal British Legion, the Last Post and Reveille played either side of a one minute silence and the laying of a wreath by Horsham District Councillor Peter Burgess. The names of those who served at Horsham Railway Station and lost their lives in action were read out as members of the public and station staff listened.
The wreath was laid onto a metalwork sculpture which was made at HMP Ford Workshops, and loaned for this event.
Rowena Tyler, Arun Valley Line Officer said: “This event and all the others planned on the Arun Valley Line during the Remembrance period remind us of those who served selflessly in the First World War. To see the number of people who stopped for the minutes’ silence, even those heading for the trains or at the ticket offices, was extremely gratifying.”
The Station Manager, Sue Litterick was honoured to have the first ceremony on the Arun Valley Line at Horsham Station and thanks must be given to Eve White, the Royal British Legion Branch Secretary for her meticulous planning.
